Can I restrict access to a chat room my pre-teen kids are using? I have shut them down to limited accounts but where do I stop them getting on to a certain website and still allow them administrator priviledges (for the useful stuff they do online)? They are young enough that ''"It's not working at that site anymore '' will suffice, please help!!!!

it's free. it's easy. it's produced by a company that provides software and hardware to allow business to set their internet policy. block whatever you want.

watch what is going on, so at least you can be aware. block what you want. keep your computer in an open family-friendly area. On my "kid's computer" downstairs, where game play occurs I restrict what comes in severely..no unrated sites. In the family room, where home work, education, conversation is more likely to take place, unrated sites are allowed. Set your own rules, and start with a conversation within your family about the proper and improper use of information providers...like the internet and the media. Plenty of good modeling and teaching moments to be had.

they have a user forum.

I don't know about free, but I've heard AOL has a decent included program. The most improtant thing to do is make certain they are not on the internet unattended. They should only have access in a place you can monitor them. Kids should NOT ever have a pc in their room, or be on the internet when their parents cannot watch what they are doing. Most pedophiles that haunt the net count on parents not wanting to take this responsibility on. Keep your child safe, watch their every move. This is a much greater concern than your kid accidentally stumbling upon some porn or something. You wouldn't let your child go someplace where there were known pedophiles without you being there. The internet is a "place", and you can't let your kids run loose there.

you need to go to www.trendmicro.com and download pc-cillin internet secuirity 14. quite possibly the pest security suite on he market today (speaking a s user of the software).
You can use the firewall rules to block access to certain types of webiste by category or by website domain name under the exceptions options.
really easy to do. you geet a thirty day free trial and once the trial ends buy the years update lience for $39.99 approx which provides almost hourly updates. as soon as an update is available it can be downloaded.
you can set the software to automatically update definitions from one to 12 hours however the default setting (in built) is updes every three hours. but i'd recomend you change that to every hour check for updates.

first never allow your child to have admin priviliges. they could inadvertantly install a virus or other malware (before your firewall and A/virus) can catch it or know about it. and then your system could be completely up S creek with out the proverbial paddle.
if they need admin priviliges you should have them come and ask you to authorise the action. if you approve input your admin credentials and let the kids carry on, (it is only going to take you less than five minutes to detrmine if the action need approval or not). whereas if you crash your system and have to re-install from a backup or from original disks can take upto a week depending on the ammount of data that has to be restored.
ok normally no more than a couple of hours to get the operating system back up.

seriously do you realy think pre-teens can judge what is safe practice and what is not no matter how clever you think they are or they appear to be. the scammers target scams and malware at kids or young adults, on the principle that everyone wants something for nothing. so bundle malware with music, videos or other files and who is to know until it istoo late? no one normally.

i speak from experiance i used to use file share programs to download music and found to my cost that not everyone was as honest as me, they were editing the data to provide all kinds of things. one little infection killed a hard drive and all the data on it.
that was admitedly before i had a great firewall and malware protection. but you can never be too careful.

If its specific sites you can go to Tools - Internet Options - Privacy - Sites - and type the sites you want to restrict and then click block.Ask your ISP if they have a package where they can block certain sites you request. Mine has one - kinda like a child proof software, where it blocks certain categories taht you put in.
