When I was a young man I worked in a logging region for a couple summers. Their method was to blow them up, which was a lot of fun. You bore deep holes in the stumps and insert dynamite. Not too much left afterwards but kindling usually.

Dynamite as a stump remover? I love it!
If you dig down around the roots, you may be able to get in there with a long pry bar and use leverage to bring it up. You can then run some chain around it and hook it up to the back of a truck and SLOWLY pull it out of the ground. If you gun the gas pedal, you may pull the bumper off. If you have tow hooks on the truck, that would be the best as they are bracketed to the frame of the vehicle.

I have drilled 4 deep holes in a stump about 2' across then poured clorox bleach into them...repeat when consumed.
Have taken 30 trees down and know it works. Cheaper than
buying the expensive stuff.

Funny you should ask. Last spring a medium sized birch tree in my back yard died...just like that. I had to chop it down bit by bit. Then, I spent a couple of hours every day for WEEKS...chopping out the stump. I couldn't get a stump grinder, or backhoe, or bulldozer or truck with chain or anything else anywhere near that stupid stump....it took forever but finally...good riddance...sometimes you just have to use plain old fashioned elbow grease. I would have preferred....and paid for....a stump grinder.

When there is at least 6-10 feet of trunk remaining - bulldozer pushes them over.
Depending on how soon you want it gone, there are some chemical formulas that cause the wood to rot and disintegrate.
Unless you want to plant something in the same place right away, I usually cut to below-ground level with a chainsaw and cover it over with dirt.

I found that the cheapest way to remove a stump is to drill several holes on the top, fill them with buttermilk, cover the holes with plumber putty and wait about a year.
The stump will be completely rot out.

We removed 5 Arizona Ashes from our yard. When we got to the stump we drilled holes in the stumps and poured diesel fuel in the holes. Check first and see if you are allowed to burn. Good Luck

Chop it down with an axe, drill holes in it and pour some stump remover in the holes to speed natural rotting of the stump, pour with a fire accelerate and burn it out.

You can buy a product, called "Stump Out," at hardware stores. Follow package directions(similar to "buttermilk" idea). I've used it many times with success.
