There is no specific reason, although the number SEVEN appears in many aspects of Mythology and religion. People always talk of Seven Gates of Heaven, the 7 days of a week, 7 seas, 7 colours. This number is embedded in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern tradition and history.

bye, and hope it suffices.

The Seven Wonders were wonders because they were among the most popular tourist destinations; even as early as 1600 BC, tourist graffiti was scrawled on monuments in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings (by which time the Great Sphinx of Giza was already a thousand years old).
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (as compared to MODERN World)is a widely-known list of 7 remarkable constructions of classical antiquity. It is notable that the Seven Wonders sites were all man-made; no natural features were included since they were not popular destinations.
It was based on guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. Later lists include those for the Medieval World and the Modern World. With the industrial revolution's impact on the environment and the resulting naturalism of the Romanticism movement, natural features have become tourist destinations in and of themselves and as such new "Seven Wonders" lists have been created that incorporate natural features.
Note : The earliest known version of the list was compiled by Antipater of Sidon, who listed the structures in a poem around 140 BC:-
"I have set eyes on the wall
of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots,
and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus,
and the hanging gardens,
and the Colossus of the Sun,
and the huge labour of the high pyramids,
and the vast tomb of Mausolus;
but when I saw the house of Artemis
that mounted to the clouds,
those other marvels lost their brilliancy,
and I said, 'Lo, apart from Olympus,
- the Sun never looked on aught so grand."
(Antipater, Greek Anthology IX.58)
The historian Herodotus, the scholar Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240 BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, and the engineer Philon of Byzantium had made earlier lists but the writings have not survived, except as references.
The Greek category was not "Wonders" but "theamata"— closer to "must-sees". The list that we know today was compiled in the Middle Ages—by which time many of the sites were no longer in existence—comprising the seven most impressive man-made monuments from the ancient world.
Since the list came mostly from ancient Greek writings, only sites that would have been known and visited by the ancient Greeks were included. but as of today the list includes more than 7 wonders including both natural and man-made sites.

7 is mystic as has been stated, but also its an odd number, so you couldn'y halve the list (any shorting would demand reasoning and defense) and also had they been the 5, or 10 wonders, one could assume a ranking of some sort. The list was merely intended to be a guide to their existance, not a ranking of coolness or popularity.
