it depends a lot on what you want to do with it. If you've never owned or used a PDA before, you probably want to start with something simple and inexpensive like the Palm Z22:

If you want to do more advanced things like listen to music and access WiFi internet, go with the LifeDrive or TX:

Finally, if you want a combination cellphone/Palm, go with one of the Treo models:

Personally, I'm partial to Palm, but there are also Windows Mobile PDA devices out there that maybe another person can tell you about.

I bought a Sony Clie SJ33 in the US about three and a half years ago and it's still going strong.

My Mum's always had her eye on it so this year I bought her a Palm Z22. Tesco's, special offer price.

Speed is an issue to look for and available memory. The Clie has 15MB to play with which is tiny compared to some new systems.

It really depends on what you want to do with it.

I can use email, watch movies (removable Sony Memory Stick - also acts as a backup device), listen to music, set alarms keep hundreds of names and addresses, I can create, edit and amend Word and Excel documents on it and keep photographs, despite it's compact size and reduced memory capacity.

I've also used it to unlock the region coding on a DVD player and I can beam documents to my laptop or print directly from it.

I also have a half-size Infra-Red keyboard for really long letters or reports.

I've often though about changing it but then stop myself. It does everything I want it to do and I find stuff on it in no time.

I've seen people struggle with iPaqs and Jornada's because they forget where something is supposed to be stored.

I'm using Graffitti software as handwriting recognition but the new version Graffitti 2 is easier to learn.

Still, it's a grand piece of kit and I use it many times daily

If you decide on the Z22, I recommend the Proporta case with the aluminium sheet in it to protect the screen.

Firstly, think about what it is that you would need a palm pilot for. I have one, but it is a Zire 31, and all it is good for is storing addresses, tel no's, and photos. It's one good point is that it is a compact weekly planner and shopping list - If you need one for emailing, wi-fi, etc, etc, you should probably go to the nearest dealer and get advice on functionality, and then go on bestbuy.com and look for a great deal :)
