there is no clear cut definition of the two combined. However garage as we understand in the uk (uk garage), derives from speed garage which is a speeded up version of US garage which in the uk we would most likely call soulful house. In the nineties london djs who were playing us garage speeded up their records and speed garage was invented (also known as london garage in the early days or 2step)) guys like mj cole, dj ez, dj luck etc pioneered this sound and created their own music to complement it. UK garage was born. the us sound has evolved less with the garage beat still very prevalent in us garage but the uk has died commercially due to many factors, not least of which is the violence and bed press. now the sound has changed and the more high profile uk djs are playing house or us garage again (dj ez, dream team, and dj face of copyright fame most notably) or playing grime, dub step etc etc
for most the us garage sound is the true garage sound and uk garage a short lived imposter.
