Well it is interesting how I got involved in Baseball- Yankees in particular.
My husband was in a very abusive home with his parents and was then place in a very abusive foster home. He often tells me that when he had nothing else to live for he lived for watching the Yankees especially but also just loved baseball.
My life is like the movie Fever Pitch just replace the Red Sox with the Yankees. My husband lives, breathes and bleeds baseball...well...pinstripes but he will watch any baseball game even little league.
When we first met I didn't realize his passion for the game but as I got to know him I realized how important it is to him. So, I developed the same love for the game. He is like a little kid when I take him to see the Yankees every year for his birthday. When he met Jeter, Posada, Riveria he was shaking so bad I had to sit him down. He feels like these people are his family because for so long it was all he had. No one loved him and everyone either abused or left him - everyone except the Yankees and baseball.
I have learned to accept that and love the game because he loves it so much. He has told me the love for the game has saved his life many times before he met me. He has portrait tats of Yankee Greats all over his body and I am ok with that. The Yankees saved a wonderful man so that I could find him and marry him.
It is very important to me!
EDITED in response to Jason W: I am glad you found someone that has developed the same love for the game as you. I love to see my husband forget about everything while he is watching a baseball game. It is a great escape for many people who have had troubled pasts. Sounds like baseball saved you in a lot of ways too and now you can share it with your girlfriend. I am glad!!!!!

Let's see.
Playing baseball was always the greatest thrill for me. I played in college and still play alot in my spare time in local leagues. For a long time being on the field was the only thing I could think about. It still is, too.
Apart from that, I've coached Little League and seen a lot of youngsters have absolutely magical moments. 6 year olds playing baseball is the purest form of the game. Nothing brings a smile to my face more than watching a youngster play. Teaching the game is something I would recommend to anyone.
Recently I started umpiring high school games. Every couple of days in the spring I get to be an integral part of the development of young players. Alot of whom have enormous talent. Yes, I deal with arguing coaches and fans but that's just part of the game.
The transition from player, to coach, to umpire, and (hopefully) to coach again when I have children has been a great journey. Every year I have season tickets to my favorite team (Oakland Athletics) and there is never a time that I step into the stadium and can't feel the mystique that is baseball. Even at Giants games I get goose bumps from the electricity in the air. Of course, a part of me wishes that I could join them on the field; because for me baseball is still as magical as it was when I started playing 22 years ago.
Edit: In response to krchamp; and to add more information. I was raised in a very poor family and although we didn't have much, somehow my mother (single) still found the money for me to play. Baseball was my relief from worrying about my next meal, my little brother, and any other problem that comes from being poverty stricken.
My girlfriend of 2 years has also developed the same love that I have for baseball and it's something that I love to share with her. She never watched sports of any kind before meeting me, but I took her to a game and she fell in love with it. I love it when she asks me questions about different players, what stats mean, and any other thing she may have to ask. Women like you, and her, make a huge difference in the lives of men from troubled pasts by sharing in something they feel passionate about.

My son is 12 years old and I have to choose a lot of time whether to be his dad or his friend. But when I coach his little league team or we attend baseball games together are a time when I can be both. As I grew up my father took me to games and it was the best times I can remember being with him, I could talk to him as my father and my friend. I am hoping my son feels the same way.

i have been playing baseball for the past 13 years. it is by far my favourite sport. being a pitcher is the best feeling on the field, you control the game. i follow baseball pretty closely (except im iffy on behind-the-scenes) and i attend about 2-3 Jays games a year and watch a hell of a lot on tv. pretty much my summer is baseball

My Dad and my brother live and breath the sport. They love attending the games and reading about the trades. My brother when he was a little kid could rattle off averages off a bubblegum card, it was amazing!
I used to but not as much now.
But it is still fun to watch on a sunny afternoon, it breaks up the monotny of normal life.

Daily. Even in the off-season. It's really the only sport I care about, and Boston is the only team for my family. We are all obsessed.
