In the late 1950, Russia launched the first satellite called Spuntnik. Immediately the US decided it had to get ahead of Russia in space technology. In order to do this, they needed to have a computer network to be able to share information. So the ARPANET was formed.

The military joined the network, followed by schools and then businesses. The ARPANET began to grow into the Internet. It took the invention of the first "www" server and the web browser to make it possible for home computers to connect.

Bill Gates prediction in the mid 90s that the Internet would never amount to anything has proven wrong, and Microsoft is still playing catchup in the Internet arena.

It was originally started for the Military as a means for them to keep critical data in many places in case of nuclear attack and then any place could access the other. It wasn't know as the Internet then. The public had no access to it and for the most part it was not even known about. Then when the cold war was winding down, they decided to start selling rights to big companies with over seas operations to help pay the cost of maintaining the network. Later it was opened to the general public and you can see the monster it has become.
