Love Jane Eyre, I like Shirley because she is also a strong independent woman, a woman who makes her own mind. It is interesting to know about the industrialization era and its effects in some parts of England.

I've read Shirley, but not Jane Eyre (yet). I didn't much like Shirley, so I may prefer Jane Eyre.

I like both, too, Tiginamz, but Jane Eyre is really better written and Charolotte Bronte put her soul into it. The two women in the novels do have surface differences but I think they were both strong women with uncharacteristic (for that time) senses of self-worth. Compared to Emily Bronte's Catherine in Wuthering Heights, they're inspiring.

Jane Eyre, but of course both are eclipsed by Wuthering Heights.
