why use a christmas tree, lets all just be kids and make one from different pasta shapes, about 6'high, then decorate it with brilo pad (i think thats how you spell it), sponges, bottle caps, pubes (needs to be ginger though to give it some colour), ermmmm spoons, cigaret butts, belly button fluff (for snow effect), and for the angel on top it was to me a tamagochi (dont forget to feed it)
how does that sound???????? might need to send this idea to blue peter and see one made earlier.

a pickle ; the pickle tradition of where you hide the glass ornament pickle on the tree and the person who finds it , gets an extra gift; the other items mentioned here in responses are just too sick to associate with a religious celebration of the birth of Jesus.
