depends on your ports maximum speed.
for example my ethernet is 1 Gigbit (1000Mb)per second transfer rate.
Usb as others have said can be a little slower. although the person who said about the drivers for the ports taking up resources, this is overcome easily if and when that happens by disadbling the other network adapter, should you need to, but on a relatively modern computer (under 5 years old) it will make no noticable change to your systems performance.
so if you have a lan enabled modem/router then I have to stress ethernet is the way to go. and if you want to be able to share your files between computers on your home network and you have want to be able to gain access wirelessly you need wireless capability in each computer you wish to share files and you need the ethernet as well for your primary system (your home FTP server) this is more for security than anything else. and remeber to secure your network properly.

they're both going to be about the same, but i would defiantly use ethernet, the usb is just there in case you don't have ethernet, and when you use usb you also have to have the drivers which emulate another network adapter on the computer and everything has to be translated by yet another driver which will take up more system resources. ethernet is traditional, standard, and better. :)

I would use the ethernet. Not only it's faster but you can use the USB connections for other peripherals.

It does not matter whether you choose ethernet or USB. It all depends on the speed you got from your provider. Even if USB is only 10Mbps and Ethernet is 100Mbps but you only got 1.5Mbps speed from your provider, 1.5MBps is the max you can get, theoretically.
