You don't mention if you want to record terrestrial TV or freeview or satellite.
If you are interested in recording freeview I strongly recommend the Humax 9200. It is a great unit and very quiet. It has twin tuners so you can watch one channel while recording another or alternatively you can record two different channels simultaneously. I would avoid Philips, great innovators but poor implementers.

Actually, I recently purchased a Philips dvdr3455h and I am absolutely thrilled with it's high quality performance and ease of use. When I first began looking into buying one, I was reluctant and intimidated by the techno stuff. But, since my purchase about 3 months ago, I consider it the best purchase I have made in some time.

Hard drive dvd recorders are nice because you can record tv shows directly to the built-in hardrive. Phillips recorder is not a good buy. Try a Pioneer, Toshiba or JVC recorders instead--they're among the best.

I have a Sony HX910 250 Gb for nearly a year, fantastic machine.
The best things for me are the picture quality and no more looking for blank video tapes, usually just before you need to record something.

Yes they are good and as for purchasing one it really
depends on what your pocket can stand.Pay high and you get
the best. I like Toshiba or Sony products.
