Administration. A server based network allows you to create accounts and rights centrally and only once if you are using active directory services for instance.

Peer to peer mean that you have to configure each and every machine to allow access to files printers etc.
In Microsoft workgroups (Peer to Peer) you are limited to 10 workstations. This not the case on a Server based network.
