The better question is ... what is a better pet for YOU?
Dogs tend to be a lot more affectionate than cats, but they also
require a lot more attention. I'd never think of owning a dog if
there were days that the only thing I did for him was put down
food and water.
I'm more familiar with cats - they don't require the attention dogs
do (but they DO need attention - they're not goldfish!) so if I'm
on a nasty work project, I can put down their food and water and
they're ok if I just snuggle with them at night. But by the same
token, they don't come when they're called and aren't necessarily
excited when I offer them a toy and want to play with them.
In fact, they often flat-out refuse and go sleep in another room in
the house.
The answer to this question really depends on...
what do YOU want in a companion?

It really goes by your time and energy level there are some breeds of dogs that are less energetic and would only need a short time for play and training but if you dont have that much time a cat is great.
I constantly have to tell owners that they made a bad match for their family on the breed, most of the times the owners will own up to their neglect and start spending more time with the pet even if everyone in the family takes a couple more minutes it can add up quick.
A dog that is bored or doesnt get worn out can become highly distructive I have had clients dogs eat couches, tear curtains from walls and dig holes into mattresses, they want to come off blaming the dog and never look at themselves as the problem.

Depends on what your life style is. Cats tend to do better on their own. If you are a busy person a cat will be better. I love dogs better than cats, but I can be around my dogs all the time. I always said you don't own a cat they own you. I have 8 dogs and three cats. I see my dogs all the time, my cats I see when they are hungry or if they need something.

It really depends on you as a person.
Dogs of course require more from their owners, but they tend to be more affectionate and loyal in return. You can be more active with a dog, taking it out to play frisbee or run, but it does need a lot more time and energy than a cat.
A cat, however, is selfish and usually only wants attention when it is convenient for them. Not saying that trait is bad, just different than a dog. They take a lot less maintainence than a dog does, and are (generally speaking) cheaper to keep.
I personally like both of them, but I like ferrets best. Ferrets have the playful, curious nature of a feline, combined with the cuddly behavior of a dog (if you get a lap ferret). Sure, they smell, but if you keep their cage clean (lots of work, but worth it), they're the best of both worlds!

Both, I have 3 cats and 2 dogs. The dogs can be more entertaining. They are all very loving. I dont have to take the cats on walks. But I dont mind. I love it all. And our turtle is cool too.

I really feel that dogs make the best pets...I have 5 of them but also have 2 cats...dogs are always happy to see you and can sense when you're having a bad day... they are always there to try to make you happy and ask nothing in return.

I am a dog person so my answer is dogs! the reason I have learned to dislike cats is because our neighbor had over 100 cats that ripped our screens, **** in our yard everywhere most cats bury their feces these cats left big runny piles every where. they scratched my paint on my car you look like white trash when you drive around with cat prints all over your car. the stench was so bad that you would gag when you walked outside after taking matters into our own hands on several occasions they would breed and breed and for everyone we got rid of ten more came! So finally after 5 years of this I called the board of health and animal control they took away all but 2 cats the officer actually came out throwing up it was so bad. but as we go by we can now see several cats back in the window. that is fine as long as he keeps them in his house. I always said that he will be on the news one day when they find him dead and the cats will probably eat his face off, it sounds gross but it does happen.

Cats are alright because they can be nice to have as a friendly pet and they can be more intelligent than a dog itself. But a dog can be easier to train than a cat bcause they take different methods and they can be nice to play around with if you're bored. So it's whatever you're more compatable with.

My favourite is dogs, because I'm touchy-feely. If you like a more independent pet, then pick a cat. Dogs will always welcome you when you come home, cats might try to hide or play some sort of game with you.

Definately cats, they are so independant but yet very sensitive and loving, a dog on the other hand needs a lot of looking after and have you ever heard of a cat attacking a baby? well its rare. I love dogs and cats but my two cats are the best they know when you are upset and make me laugh................
