Unfortunatly that transmission in the 3.0/3.3 liter engine has a bad reputation.

First off of course check the level of fluid see if its burnt smelling or any other noticible symtoms

the transmission is their first electronic controlled, disconnect the battery and leave the door open for a few minutes to make sure all power is drained from the car

Reconnect battery and take it for a test drive sometimes the computer gets a bad set of instructions and allowing it to relearn can fix such problems

also is there any check engine light on?

Good luck

Worn seize. Or worn synchronizers in the transmission. A ninety 3 kind if the seize hasn't ever been replaced its about time for it. The synchros. Have a constrained lifespan as well. Your likey about to have an intense priced restoration in the close to destiny. yet at that age its seen upkeep. those are wareable aspects. The aspects themselves are not that intense priced. this is the demanding paintings fee that kills your wallet. start up saving your spare replace. a huge fee isn't to a ways away. rigidity till it breaks yet be prepared to spend some money at the same time as it dose. it is a reliable vehicle so if the automobile is often in reliable condition then this is properly absolutely worth the funding. although you could get a more desirable recent mx5 on craigslist for round 2,000. you ought to also evaluate promoting the your mx3 before it breaks. And go that route. you could get a million,500 for the mx3 if this is in reliable condition. So actually you finally end up with a more desirable recent more desirable ideal vehicle for below 500 money of your fee. Witch is more less costly then a transmission job. That it is a few thing you may evaluate.

The transmission being stuck in 2nd gear is what is called "limp mode" on a Chrysler transmission. When a problem is deteced the transmission will lock itself into second gear until it can be taken in for service. On many Chrysler vehicles the most common cause is a faulty Output Speed Sensor though I don't know for sure if the transmission on your vehicle has this. If that is the cause, they are cheap and easy to replace.

The reverse thing...?????

lethander is correct, these are natorious for solenoid packs going bad. You car is stuck in limp mode and will remain to be until code is cleared. Like lethander said, disconnect battery to erase memory. You will more than likely find the solenoid pack to be your problem.

The transmission has internal problems .It needs to be taken to a transmission shop for removal and disassemble ,inspection . There is nothing external that will cause both problems .

This might sound dumb, but at the least you have a linkage issue, at worst your transmission is hosed...
