Things must of changed since the 80's. I used to work in a trekking centre from the ages of 8-10 and we used to frequently take adults, who had never ridden out with maybe a 14 year old up front? We used to hang back supposedly to shut the gates but we always used to gallop back, frequently setting the whole line of ponies off - with screaming grown ups on the backs. Brilliant.

That can't be legal anymore...

Yes. There are a couple of trekking qualifications. Google
Welsh Trekking and Riding Association Trek Leader and Trek Escort Awards.
