Asker must be from the UK
I'm in Canada. I'm not a "Green Party" (yes, we have one) supporter per se, but am concerned about the environment. But before pushing individuals, I think corporations that spew out toxins need to be dealt with first.
I drive a small economy car to save money. But gotta tell you folks, if I won the lottery, my very first purchase............
BIG HONKIN HUMMER H2....oh Ya! All the gadgets too.... and custom paint job..... camo blue.....dark blues, light blues, aqua....
No because I want to pollute, not because I care about status, just because it's my dream vehicle.....everyone can dream, can't they?

Because you gotta start somewhere - and don't worry, the others get the attention now and then too. Plus at least the buses, lorries and aeroplanes are fulfilling their function - but Mom driving her little "angel" to school half a mile away in a 4x4, on city streets, when the kid (and the Mom) need the exercise... that's a stupid way to create more pollution.

I think the point is that buses carry more than 20 times the number of people than 4x4's do. Aeroplanes also carry way more people and lorries are used to transport goods. Basically 4x4's guzzle more petrol than one person actually needs to get around.

I am not a green supporter but think they are a bunch of moaners with nothing better to do. I used to belong to a 4X4 club in the UK & most sundays we used to repair & maintain country tracks & paths so walkers could use them easier, filling potholes of mud, cutting back brambles ect. Also we were on lists as volanteers in times of crisis, we were often called out to assist the police to look for missing children, help in flood areas & few years ago a convoy of 4X4s took caravans to Italy after a disarster for homeless people all at the 4X4 owners expense. A few times a year we took disabled people on drives into the countryside that was normaly inacsessable to them by normal car or minibus. Its true that most 4X4s are not used for there purpose but as usual its the these people that spoil it for the people that truly enjoy there 4X4 & dont mind it getting muddy now & again also putting it too good use.

The verbal abuse and attacks upon 4X4 vehicle owners and drivers is base upon envy and nothing else. A large 4x4 people carrier, a Range Rover etc., is no more polluting than a farm tractor, a truck or any other large diesel driven unit, including London Black Cabs and most buses in our cities and towns.
Bah humbug!

Because:
1. aeroplanes (for example) use less fuel, and pollute less, per "passenger mile" (ie you transport lots of people at at time over long distances so the average pollution per person is low)
2. 4x4 drivers per se aren't attacked. many people need to drive 4x4s (farmers for example). The criticism is levelled at those who feel the need to drive a 4x4 in towns, where there is no need.

Now lets see....Lorries =essential supplies, Buses = essential Transport, Aeroplanes = Essential cargo V 4 x 4 's in TOWN that do 2 trips to school with one child and then spend the rest of the day hogging the shopping spaces and sitting on the drive as a status symbol?!!

Buses and aeroplanes carry many people. Lorries carry important goods and supplies. 4X4's carry pretentious middle class women with no obvious use or purpose.

I think its because the 4x4 ppl go bush bashing on weekends, camp pollute and generally disregard the bushland or they carve up the beaches. No I'm not green especially mainly pink with a tinge of green, respect all areas even the road, I drive a smaller car because it suits me but the number of 4x4's which you cant see around or through can be frustrating, they can be even more frustrating when they use their vehicle in a menacing manner.
