My 2001 Honda civic allows just about 30 miles after the gas light. my friends car also, Then I know other peopl, who when there gas light is on they better pull into the last one up the street, they are doing good to get another mile. Check your owners manual, or test it one day, just make sure you have some gas on hand.

There is absolutely no way of judging how many miles you can travel after the red light goes on. It depends upon many factors: the speed at which you are traveling, the inflation of your tires, how much stop and go driving you do, how much pressure you apply on the accelerator when starting from a dead stop. You should never let your gas go down to the point whereby the red light flashes on. When the tank is almost empty all of the dirt and other ingredients that have accumulated in the bottom of the tank for years are forced out of the tank and can gum up your engine.
I fill up or at least to 3/4 of a tank whenever the Gage reads 1/4.
I have never run out of gas and I have been driving for over 55 years.

The whole idea behind putting a low fuel light is so you will not run out of gas. It is not meant to see how far you can go after it comes on. Fuel pumps can be damaged when you run totally out of gas. I would suggest that as soon as the light comes on you find the nearest gas station. by doing this you will not be sitting stalled, holding up traffic or , be stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

Next time you get low on gas.Put a 5 gallon can of gas in your trunk. And drive your car until it runs out of gas then just pull off the road and pour some gas in your car. Don't forget to write down the mileage when your light comes on.

I would say between 5 and 10 to be safe, you do not want to get stranded! Also running your car that low on fuel is REALLY bad for it. You can do alot of damage that will cost much more than a tank of fuel.
Also, and interesting fact: using higher octane fuel will give you better gas mileage!

the various responses so some distance are humorous! heavily, if the basic is going on and rancid, think about everywhere from 3 to 7 miles left (no longer unavoidably highway velocity). If it truly is on reliable, think about in problem-free words about a million mile left. examine your proprietor's guide or call your broking to verify. i tips you do not go decrease than a million/8 tank when you're in a hectic section the position you are able to with out delay get gasoline yet in no way decrease than a million/4 tank in case you are able to help it.

When you allow your gas tank to run this low, sediments that have gathered at the bottom of your tank will clog your fuel pump. We all know gas is costly, but a fuel pump costs more. When your tank reaches 1/4 fill er up! :-D

Don't run it that low, this can cause fuel pump problems. Go right to the gas station if the light comes on.
