Part of my existing documents was also removed in the process. How to avoid that next time?

thats good a simple question to answer.
go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ now allow it to scan your computer. fix any and all errors it reports. now update your preexisting firewall and viruscanner with the latestest updates available by clicking the programs update option or by goiung direct to the publishers website.
Alternatively go to www.trendmicro.com and download pc-cillin internet security14 it is the best security suite you will ever use with updates almost hourly on occasion, unlike other companies who update once or twice a week or worse monthly.
to be sure you did remove the virus you need to turn off system restore (windows XP and vista) see the help section of the O/s for detailed instructions.
now repeat the scan and clean. you then need to use the online scan again. to be sure you are clean use both the trendmicro scan online and the scan available at www.symantec.com again fix any problems the scan finds (the scan can clean your system for you if you let it). now repeat the whle thing again.
only once you get a congratulationss your system is clean or similer message should you power off your computer (use the shutdown not re-start) wait a few minutes (two or three is more than sufficient. if you use a router turn that off at the same time you turn off your computer (making sure no other network users are on the home network). again wait a good five minutes with your router. so may be go have a meal or a snack/ coffee break etc. when you return power up the hub/ router first. then your computer.
sign in as normal. run the update tool for your virus scanner. run a system wide scan leaving no sector unchecked. every partitioin, every sector every file and folder should be checked for scan.
wait for the scan to finish. (depending on your computer system a scan can take from 5 minutes to more than a couple of hours).

if that reports all clean, repeat the process using the online scanners again wait for them to finish. your system should report back as clean. that is great.
if and when it does, first turn on system restore and create a new restore point.
now go to www.grc.com and run the shields up security test.
if you find any holes in your firewall patch them by opening up your firewalls control panel and making the required changes such as block all in and out ICMP ICMPv6. as well as blocking all inbound TCP and UDP packets from all ip addresses.
you want to set your firewall to warn you of outgoing data (each time a program is launched and requests internet access you will be prompted with an allow or deny request. simply allow all the programs you use as you use them and as they request access. and block anything else. if after blocking something you find a program you used to use no longer functions correctly just go back to your firewalls control panel and adjust the error.
the program with the problem will report what the protocol or service name it needs and can not use in an error message normally.

with time your system will be in true stealth mode and will as time progresses as yourfirewall learns your authorised programs you will get less and less prompts. which is a good thing.

To be sure your PC is clean, run a different virus scanner then normal on it. There are several that you can run directly from the Internet without having to actually install them. If it passes that scan, you are good. (Google "online virus scanner")

The only way to be sure that you do not lose documents in the future is to be sure you are backing them up on a regular basis. Get yourself a flash memory stick, second internal drive, or USB drive and develop the habit of copying your My Documents (and other folders were you store data) to it at least once a week. 15-20 minutes once a week saves a lot of headaches.

Run an online virus scan. Most major Anti Virus Manufacturers offer this service through their websites. Do a search for free online virus scan and I would recommend using a few of them before you consider your machine safe.

run a Virus Scan...a free web based one can be found at www.trendmicro.com

To keep it from happening again...Install an antivirsun such as Trend PC-Cillin..and keep it updated.

Install a Firewall...external is better (ex. a router)...but Software is good too.
