It's probably because they have a higher proportion of fat in their bodies. Fat floats. That's the scientific reason.

Something floats or sinks based on it's density and the density of the fluid around it (air, water and oil are all examples of fluids). There are a lot of factors that can play into how dense a person is, from dehydration to muscle tone to body fat percentage (Keep in mind that the optimal human body is supposed to be 75% water). The following shows what happens between the two:

Object is more dense than fluid - object sinks lower
Object is equally as dense as fluid - no movement
Object is less dense than fluid - object rises.

There are two kinds of body fat, essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is what is needed by the body to function correctly and reproduce. Storage fat is the body's method of padding sensitive areas of the body, like internal organs. Men require 2-5% of their body to be essential fats, women require 10-13%.

Because fats are less dense than lean mass (muscle, bone, blood, etc.), pound for pound, a girl will be less dense than a boy. If you take one girl and one guy of the same height and weight, she will be more likely to float than he will. (Actually both are likely to float, but she will probably have more mass above the waterline than he will.)

Girls DON'T have more density. Just the opposite. Girls have a thin layer of fat under the skin, that is usually lacking in boys. Because of that, they more easily float in water.

Girls are more padded. Think it through and you'll see how to explain why that is scientifically. I can't do your homework for ya. But that's what it boils down to, if in fact it is true they float more.

I didn't know that girls are more dense than boys. Could you provide some further details please?
(edit: thanks to those who mentioned body fat)

Even if girls were more dense then that would mean they sink more than boys do.

Fat floats on water whereas muscle does not. Females generally have more body fat.
