Everyone dies.
There was an article in the American Journal of Medicine that quoted yearly death rates attributable to sports...it was an article on obesity in America.

The numbers you've been quoted here aren't even close to accurate.

I've played football since I was 9 all the way through 5 years of college. I coached High school football (ages 14 to 18) for a few years, college football for a couple (DIVII), and I have been coaching semi-pro for three in a foreign country...

I have never been close to a death from football, not in the same league or the same state of hundreds of leagues in the last 30 plus years...

It can be a very dangerous sport, I've seen tons of injuries - it's the nature of the sport - but not death.

I hope this is of benefit to you.

I too would question Jonti's numbers. See the following:

Despite protective equipment and rule changes to emphasize safety, injuries remain very common in football. It is increasingly rare, for example, for NFL quarterbacks or running backs (who take the most direct hits) to make it through an entire season without missing some time to injury. Additionally, twenty-eight football players, mostly high schoolers, died from injuries directly related to football from 2000-05, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research. Concussions are common, with about 41,000 suffered every year among high school players according to the Brain Injury Association of Arizona.

Additionally, as with any physical activity, there are a number of people who will die due to heart problems or other issues that are not directly related to football. It is extremely rare for someone to die as a direct result from an injury on the field, but it is more common for professional football players to have shortened live spans due to the accumulation of injuries over their careers.

To you people who have said nobody has died, you're totally wrong. You have to be an idiot if you said that. 2 seasons ago, a player for the Los Angeles Avengers died DURING a game due to breaking his neck when going for a tackle. Helmet to Helmet tackles have caused death, and a helmet to the lower back can break the back, thoug that one doesn't always cause death, it has. There have indeed been MANY people die during a game while playing, not just heat stroke, or a random heart attack, but from PLAYING the game. As for the numbers, I honestly have no idea, I doubt it's been counted up. Hell you can die in a lacrosse game.

jonti is about right...but not exact

if you count football when it was first played, the first year over 10 people died because it was very unsafe, then a new wierd formation was invented and even more people died. now, it was not until almost 70 years later when it was finally certain formations and hits were outlawed and saftey equipment became important.

Lots of pro football players have died. They did not die on the field, but they died a as result of the fame and fortune they acquired by playing. Drug addictions, steroids, and venereal disease got plenty of them.

On the field, during a game...nobody.

But there have been players that have had heat strokes during practice(look up Korey Stringer, Vikings defensive tackle) and passed away but I am sure that no one has ever been killed playing in a live game.

No one. You can't die playing American Football. You can get a concussion, and that's the worst, so I'd say no one.
