Gingerbread biscuits are a very old commodity that have been sold at fairs and village markets for centuries in Britain and also throughout Europe and Scandinavian countries. One popular British gingerbread is the famous Grantham Ginger Biscuit. The origin of the Gingerbread House most seen at Christmas is thought to be German and these edible Gingerbread house decorations were probably first developed about 200 years ago. Many German customs crossed the Atlantic to the Americas and are now firm favourites worldwide. Recently in the UK, food fashions have included Gingerbread items and products like Stollen and Panettone. All have become very fashionable food items to offer to spur of the moment guests at Christmas and many make great little gifts for casual calling.

Children are the motivation. They love to make a house that they can eat. It is alot of fun watching them make them. Usually they end up eating the decorations more than they apply them. Then like little mice they nibble at bits of the house leading up until Christmas. It helps them pass the time in their anxiousness as well. It's origins stem from Germany and the Monks who use to make and deliver gingerbread. However, the gingerbread house was made famous in the Germanic Story by the brother's Grimm in Hansel & Gretal when the witch's house lured in the children because it was made of gingerbread and candy.

there is a german tale. hänsel and gretel. their stepmom didn't want them to live with her and her husband so she led them away. the kids got lost in a forest and didn't know the way home. suddenly they found a house made of gingerbread. it was tasty. but a witch came out of the house. she held hänsel imprisoned for eating him. she fed him with many good things till he was fat. then she turned on the oven and told gretel to look if it's warm enough for baking hänsel. gretel said she didn't know how warm it had to be. so the witch looked into the oven. gretel pushed her inside. the witch burned, hänsel and gretel found their way back home and everyone was happy :)

You can decorate trees with gingerbread cookies if you can't afford ornaments. They smell great, too.
Trees used to be decorated with nuts and fruit.
