There are arguments that Jesus was born either in April or Sept. But he was DEFINATELY not born in December. From the description of the Harvests etc at the time most scholars would suggest around Sept.
It was winter soltace that was held in december and it was changed to a Christian holiday so that converting Pagans to Christianity wasn't too difficult-they still had the same festivals etc just a different meaning behind them.

He obviously wasn't born at Christmas, because then he would have been called Noel or Rudolph or something!

The real story (boring I know) is that he was probably born around September, but December is the darkest month and therefore the date was chosen as symbolic of him arriving at a dark time for the Jews and humanity. Told you it was boring...

He wasn't. He was born in the summer and the Christians took the pagan's winter solstice to celebrate their 'Christmas'.
