This question is why so many retailers have squashed the ability to return dvd's, video games, and cd's. You can only exchange at most places for the exact same title. Normally a refund will not be given.
I buy a dvd, watch it and then I have a circle of friends that I swap it with. I give them a title I won't watch again and pick one from their list. It's a great way to constantly watch new movies without having to buy them. Then I don't have the storage issue for tons of movies.
Check ebay as well...lots of cheap movies previously viewed. Most video stores offer cheap previously viewed titles too.

Happy Holidays and good luck to you!

Heck yes its unethical!!!
Doesnt make it illegal though!!!
And did you really expect me to PAY for those games I bought the other day? Buy, burn, return!
I probably shouldnt be saying this on the internet but.....

just do it i reckon. the person who will eventually buy it will be none the wiser and as long as you don't ruin the item then no one really loses anything.

for all you know half your wardrobe could have been worn before and returned

I would have to say yes--at the very least you would be lying to the store about why you're returning it.
