Archaelogy is concerned with the study and evaluation of the physical evidence of human activity in the past. The past can be anything from the dawn of time up to last week ( where it can shade into forensic archaelogy). The evidence can vary between artifacts, building remains, human remains, or changes in the landscape or environment caused by human activity ( deliberate or otherwise). In short, it is the study of material residual signs of human activity. The context of a civilization or some form of urban living is immaterial. Hope that helps.
