I don't know if there is a way to prevent it. The reasons people segregate are as numerous as the people and ideas on the earth. Most people like to be around people they can identify with and can share with. It may be by color, class, language or culture. I would rather learn to interact and appreciate the differences than try to whitewash everybody to get rid of the ugly side of life. If we tried to get rid of all the ugly we will never win, but we can learn to get along as a society.

Well, sometimes it is a good thing to segregate. I know this may sound trite, but I don't want to be part of the human race which murders, rapes and does a whole bunch of nasties to each other. So I segregate. Of course the danger is that I stereotype groups of people based upon my fears, and this is probably where the danger lies. My feelings are based upon experiences, either first hand or by what is in the media. This doesn't make them correct, but will tend to make me form judgements about individuals and groups of people in order to protect myself. I therefore tend to segregate in order to maintain my comfort level within the environment which I live. Fortunately, I am sometimes wrong; the knack is being able to recognise that and change your thoughts accordingly.
I'm not sure I was very articulate there, but I know what I mean.

You can't. It's called herding and all species of animals do it and humans are a part of the animal kingdom whether we like to think of it that way or not.
