In the last few months Americans travelling to Britain were advised to 'tone it down' a bit to try and end this public image.

You know, as an american living abroad (not in Britain) I am always amazed by the generally low quality of american tourists that visit your country. I think it has to do with the fact that you speak the same language, so you get all the folks that are not adventurous enough to step beyond the most obvious english speaking destinations. But on the other hand, I don't feel the least bit sorry for you, as the overwhelming cultural influence in the world, the U.S. has been spreading your language and customs to every corner of the planet, at no expense to you. a great part of britain's modern prestige and appeal has to do with it's relationship to the U.S., and admittedly, how good it often looks in comparison....

Americans are proud, patriotic and have a gung ho ,can do it attitude, being loud is par for the course.
They have the worlds greatest democracy and freedoms.Their soldiers fight bravely all over the world for noble causes (as do the british)while many other countries stand by and scoff at them while at the same time reaping the benefits.

The adverse public image is not the fault of americans persoanlities and bodyweight but rather the ignorant left wing media stirring up the misinformed into a frenzy of anti americanism.
Maybe some of the left think too much about overweight americans and not enough about oppressive murderous regimes of the middle east.

Americans are very sensitive about their security and law of land. They express themselves openly. It is their strength. In Yahoo Answers, some people have been making adverse remarks against their President and even Muslims. This is not American way but lack of perception. Overweight may indicate care free nature. If you are unfair to an American why he should 'tone down'.

For the most part Americans ARE loud, obnoxious, fat-a** know-it-alls. I can say it; I'm an American. No, I don't think we care. Remember, we're know-it-alls!

Perhaps the perception of the loud, obnoxious, and overweight American is accurate in a country that has classically been known as repressed, inhibited, and self claimed superior. Do the British care about their worldwide perception? answer that and you can parlay it to Americans. Maybe one of the newest countries on the block is still exercising its freedom from not being repressed by big brother, and we all know how teenagers can be, coupled with the fact that now we are a superpower, when we left "home" 200 odd years ago, we were nothing but the red headed step child. Ah the days when the student surpasses the teacher in some things

As an American who has lived in the UK for 10 years, and knows more than anyone the opinion they have of us, I certainly do care. I have long given up trying to defend the Yanks who are often so arrogant they assume it's just jealousy and tone it UP a notch if challenged, as evidenced by many earlier posts.

To the person who said "at least we're FREE, you wouldn't be asking this question if we werent"- I think the person who asked this question is in the UK, as am I, and guess what?! We're free here too! Yes that's right my fellow Americans, plenty of other countries are free too, so stop going on about it. No one cares.

ARGH!

I think it does anyone good to be perceived!
What the F does anyone care about looks or weight ?, obnoxiousness is world-wide!

In a "world" of free-speech, liberality cannot be had without the appropriate adaption in general tolerance!

Do you care if you are perceived as a judgmental, fault-finding bigot? How can you just say 'Americans' , such a blanket statement. It's a bit like asking 'Do the British care that they are perceived as hooligan lager louts?'
