I've no idea but I found this about the line in question -

"Usually attributed to John Wayne in John Ford's western movie Stagecoach (1939). But, the actual line was "There are some things a man just can't walk away from."

The origin remains obscure but in The Grapes of Wrath (1939) by John Steinbeck, in Ch. 18, there is this line, "I know this man-a man got to do what he got to do.""
