Earth Day, April 22, is the annual celebration of the environment and a time to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day has no central organizing force behind it though several nongovernmental organizations work to keep track of the thousands of local events in schools and parks that mark the day. Earth Day is observed around the world, although nowhere is it a national holiday. In the United States, it affirms that environmental awareness is part of the country's consciousness and that the idea of protecting the environment - once the province of a few conservationists - has moved from the extreme to the mainstream of American thought.

A 19th century locomotive.

This was not always the case. In the 19th century Americans, blessed with a vast land rich in natural resources, lived with the notion that fresh fields were always just over the horizon. When one exhausted the soil or forests or coal of a given place it was possible to move on to another. As industry boomed in the early 20th century people accepted without question skies blackened from smokestack emissions and rivers fouled with industrial waste. As early as the mid-1930s - and again in the 1950's - Ohio's Cuyahoga River, running through America's industrial heartland, was set ablaze by burning chemical waste from factories built upon its banks. There was no public outcry. Few people even noticed.

Earth Day is a name used by two different observances held annually in the (northern) spring, both intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Earth Day is in the public domain and open to all persons to shape. Some grassroots Earth Day organizers seek to move the date of the observance to the Summer Solstice, to take advantage of the warm temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere (where most people live) to create greater participation.

In January 1970, the Environmental Teach-in decided to call their one-off event held on April 22nd, Earth Day. The day's success led to it becoming a regular event. Senator Gaylord Nelson, an environmental activist in the U.S. Senate, took a leading role in organizing the celebration, to demonstrate popular political support for an environmental agenda. He modeled it on the highly effective Vietnam War protests of the time. [6] Senator Nelson staffed the office with college students and selected Denis Hayes (a Harvard student and Stanford graduate) as the National Coordinator of activities. It was the era of student political activism and outdoor protests that attracted news cameras. The nationwide event included opposition to the Vietnam War on the agenda. Pete Seeger was a keynote speaker and performer at the event held in Washington DC. Paul Newman and Ali McGraw attended the event held in New York City

Earth Day is on April 22 of each year, which began in 1970. Earth Day 1970 was this nation's largest organized demonstration. It was a nationwide "teach-in" to dramatize America's environmental plight to a nation barely aware of its own environmental state.

More than 20 million people participated in Earth Day 1970, giving birth to the modern environmental movement. This event helped to shape the values and priorities of an entire generation and altered American politics and policies. The following is an overview of what happened on that historical day in 1970:

More than 20 million people participated in the events, listening to speeches, holding seminars and taking practical action to clean up the environment.

New York City's Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic and more than 100,000 people attended an ecology fair in Central Park.

Congress adjourned for the day and more than 500 of its members attended "teach-ins" at universities or made speeches about saving the environment.
A smog-free car was paraded through downtown St. Louis, Missouri by the United Auto Workers of America.

New York's Governor Rockefeller signed a measure coordinating pollution abatement and conservation activities.

In 1990, 200 million people around the world participated in the Earth Day celebration, demonstrating they cared about protecting our planet's environment.

Earth Day 2000 focused on global warming and clean energy around the world. With the help of the internet, 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries around the world, participated in this event. As many of you are aware, Leonardo was chairperson for that event

It's a day that was randomly set aside in the mid-70's so various fringe groups could hawk their wares on an ignorant public in order to make a few bucks. Its worked out pretty well too.

In order to answer you question I would have to write the original story for you. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, marks the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season, although retailers often decorate for the Christmas season weeks before-hand. Many retailers open very early (typically 5 A.M.) and offer door buster deals to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season for decades, the term has been traced back only to the 1970s and did not achieve widespread popularity until about 2002.

Black Friday is frequently but erroneously referred to in the media as the busiest retail shopping day of the year. While it has been the busiest day in terms of customer traffic,[1][2] in terms of actual sales volume Black Friday is usually the fifth to tenth busiest day.[3] The busiest retail shopping day of the year in the United States (in terms of sales) is invariably in the week before Christmas, usually the Saturday before Christmas.[4]

It's a day to celebrate Earth. I celebrate by recycling, if I get around to it. The rest of the year I burn all my trash in an asbestos-lined barrel. I find the smoke flushes the owls from the trees which makes them easier to shoot.

Believe me you are not missing anything! earth day indoctrination day is a "holiday" made up by leftists who needed something to do after soviet russia fell, and so they began to try to indoctrinate our children to the communist ideals by hiding behind the cloak of environmentalism. Now it has become a platform for subtle political messages and misinformation about the environment.
