Am on epilepsy meds and so there is a greater chance of there being something wrong with the baby.

Any time you are on meds there is a chance of the meds affecting the baby. You are going to have more scans than a person who does not need meds. This is a good thing. Listen to what your OB says and have any tests he considers necessary and you and your baby will be fine. Good luck and I will pray that God will watch for you and your little one.

A friend of mine was on medication for epilepsy and she has a perfect little girl. Obviously your chances are a little higher, but if your doctor knows you are planning a baby, he will guide you through the correct channels. Yes scan's of today are extremely accurate and can pin point a tiny finger, vertabrae, so they will definately be able to spot something like downs, cleft palate etc. Amneo tests were usually done to check for downs .. and done early enough gave the mother the option of terminating the pregnancy. There is a risk of miscarriage though .. so it is one test I would be very weary of. I think if you are considering a baby, you have to speak with your GP, and find out all the pro's and con's on a medical level! Good luck, and I wish you well!

at the 12 week scan they check for the possibility of downs syndrome this is usually a combined test between the nuchal measurement and a blood test. amnioscentesis is only done if youre results say that you are in a high risk group for this, because there is a chance although small that this can cause miscarriage.
the 20 weeks scan is the main one for abnormalities and they can tell you then if you baby is likely to have any of the conditions you mentioned above, although they can never be 100% sure.
if you are especially worried about any condition (say a relative has it) then you can ask for special consideration and i would mention it to your midwife.
otherwise i wouldn't worry yourself as the chances are you will have a perfect little bundle of joy!

A nuchal scan can be used to assess the risk of Down's in that particular pregnancy.
Cleft palate, if severe enough, can also be detected by screening scans.
Scans are also important tools in checking that baby's heart is working well, and that other organs are in place.
They do amnios to confirm Down's and gender.

A rountine pregnancy scan is mainly to judge the size and rate of development of your baby. It will also show that they have a fully functional heart, brain, 2 arms n legs etc For specific problems like downs you may need further testing. Do you have ay reason to be concerned about your baby?

20 weeks scan can tell u all the things about ur baby's health. Amnio is done to check for the down's syndrome in the baby.If u have a history of down's in ur family then this test is done and there's no such thing in ur family history then u'll only have to go for a blood test.

They can tell all of that with a normal scan. I am going for my scan 21 December.
