In the 1600's, Germany (at that time, Known as Prussa) their was a huge religious uprising. To ease the tension, a roman Catholic priest named father Nickolis (also known as Saint Nickolis) came up with the idea to celebrate the birth of Jesus (also known as Christ). Nickolis would hand out gifts of food and clothing to families. And tell stories of Jesus birth. The Germans thought this to be an excellant idea and began calling Nickolis, Sintar Claose. The english translation is Santa Claus.
The English liked the celebration so much that they added a Christmas tree to represent new birth or new begining. They also started the toy giving idea. The pagans celebrated by lighting bonfires and dancing and singing around them. From this, came the use of candles and carols during the holidays. The reindeer came from the USA. Macy's department store made up the story of reindeer and Santas use of the chimney as a means to deliver the presents. They did this to boost thier toy sales.

***Well, I beleive that Christmas is celebrated because this day, December 25" is the day Jesus was born who just happens to be our saviour.
***Santa Claus came to the picture becoz of a Saint named st. Nicholas. The popular American form Santa Claus originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas).
***The tradition of Christmas carols hails back as far as the thirteenth century, although carols were originally communal songs sung during celebrations like harvest tide as well as Christmas. It was only later that carols began to be sung in church, and to be specifically associated with Christmas.
***Santa being in a sleigh I think is the product of the imagination of children
***We don't have boxing day in our country but it think Boxing day is celebrated because maybe just because that's why you're country was known in the first place..... satisfied? O hope this helps
