Do you use webcam ability to mend the gap when you can not physically be there?

Has technology helped to be closer when distance is an issue?

Sure telephones help keep the communication lines open, as well as e-mails, and snail mail packages of goodies.

How often has a webcam come in useful to be there? Or is it useful at all?

well it has made it easier to keep in touch... but some people use the internet and even the telephone as a poor substitute for an actual visit. emailing your next door neighbor a 'merry christmas' as opposed to stopping over with a hot chocolate or a bottle of wine if that's your thing.. makes it too easy to forget about the true blessings of family and friends we have at christmastime.

but as for mailing pictures, sending greetings to those who CAN'T be there, i think they all serve a purpose. my wife and i made extensive use of emails, pictures, and even webcams when we weren't able to be near each other.

as long as the feelings are true, almost any form of "seasons greetings" will do, don't you think?
