Bugatti Veyron
http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12529-1890873,00.html
Just to point out that the awesome McLaren used to be the fastest but the newer Buagatti has beaten it (it churns out 1001bhp compared to the McLarens 635). I love the McLaren, it's still my favoutite car, but the facts speak for themselves, the Bugatti is faster (it has two engines!). The McLarens top speed is 244mph but the Bugatti has been clocked at 255mph.
Rally cars are all street legal, but they can't make this sort of speed (the Bugatti can rival an actual formula 1 car for speed). The bugatti is also super cool because it changes shape as it gets faster!
And by the by, it wasn't an AC Cobra that was responsible for the 1st speed limit, it was the Jaguar E Type.
Sorry but the Veyron is the quickest production car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) with an estimated time of 2.5 seconds. It also reaches 200 and 300 km/h (124 and 186 mph) in 7.3 and 16.7 seconds respectively. This makes the Veyron the quickest-accelerating production car in history.
The driver must, using the key, toggle the lock to the left of his seat in order to use the maximum speed of 253.2 miles per hour (407.5 km/h). Theoretically it can go faster but it is electronically limited to 253.2 miles per hour (407.5 km/h) to prevent tire damage. The key functions only when the vehicle is at a stop when a checklist then establishes whether the car—and its driver—are ready to enable 'top speed' mode. If all systems are go, the rear spoiler retracts, the front air diffusers close and the ground clearance, normally 4.9 inches (12.4 cm), drops to 2.6 inches (6.6 cm).
In a speed race, if the McLaren F1 were allowed to reach 120 mph before the Bugatti started, the Bugatti would still be the first to reach 200 mph

Good Old blighty! Everyone keeps saying McClaren F1 and Veyron, but they only have a higher top end speed than whats below. Amazing that for all the millions of pounds thrown at the Veyorn & McClaren, a little manufacturer in Hinckley UK, makes something that until you hit about 150mph shows a clean pair of heels to a veyron for about £60k.
Cue: the 720bhp Ultima GTR, it's just set a new record of 9.9 Seconds for a Standing Qaurter mile with a terminal velocity of 143mph
Prior to that, it's the triple record holder for the 0 - 100 - 0 challenge.
To put that in context, it's the only supercar in the world to achieve a sub ten second quarter mile out of the box.
It's the fastest thing around a 200ft skidpan too, so that's five world records for them.
Take a look at www.ultimasports.co.uk and prepare to be amazed. There's some good videos of it Santa Pod (beating a corvette by a whole 4 seconds!). The Veyron may boast more power and a higher top speed, but over the quarter mile the GTR has it licked.
ADDITION: Er, there's hundreds of Ultima's about, there's only a handful of Saleen S7's in the world. I'd say the Ultima's more the production car than the Saleen.
And you can't include those 2000bhp buicks, they're not out of the box cars.

Looking at an old drag magazine (in Australia) from 2005 and had the following "fastest street car in Australia at the moment is a blown and injected Hk Kingswood of Craig Gerdes that went 7.74 @ 180 m.p.h. their is also Steve Athens 7.83 @179 in his twin turbo Camaro, Robert Campesi 7.83 @ 170 in his turbo cortina just to name a few" Street car class is defined here as able to be legally driven on a road in the condition that it is raced in. And usually 9 out of 10 competitors still have their registration plates on the car! ps. a HK Kingswood is an australian built late 60's GM (we call a GM a Holden over here and Kingswood was the most popular model in the 60's & 70's)

The man asked for the fastest (current) Street Legal car capable of the quarter mile.
Im sorry to burst everyone's bubble but its not the veyron. It's actually the Saleen S7. Here's the break down ladies and gents.
1. Saleen S7 - 10.5@145MPH
2. B. Veyron - 10.8@140MPH
3. F. Enzo - 11.1@134.5MPH
4. P. Carrera GT - 11.2@132.7MPH
5. Murcielago - 11.4@129MPH
6. McLaren F1 - 11.6@125MPH
7. M. Benz SLR - 11.7@126MPH
By the way, That Ultima GTR is a fast car, but I consider it more of a kit car...something similar to the Arial Atom. If you wana talk about fast quarter mile, lets talk about Good ol' AMS EVO's, little, little, stroked out 2.2 Evo 8's, pushing 1000 horsepower doing early 8's on quarter mile.

If you are talking box stock and not some two seater track car but something you can take your daughter and her boyfriend to the IHigh school ball in, then it is clearly the Mc Laren.
If you just want something to impress the mistress then its the Ultima GTR,
If you are patriotic and would not even consider a foreign car it would be the Mc Laren for 3 seats, Ultima for 2 seats.
If you would not ever consider buying a British Car again because yore Vauxhall Victor rusted out in 3 years, then you are going to get blown away. Rule Brittania.
The Veyron gets 4WDs a bad name.
Ultima GTR 9.9secs @143mph
Bugatti Veyron 10.4secs@139mph
Ferrari Enzo 11.1secs@133mph
Porsche Carrera GT 11.3secs@131mph
McLaren F1 11.6secs@125mph
Saleen S7 11.8secs@119mph
Lamborghini Murcielago 12.0secs@121mph
Ford GT40 12.2secs@121mph
Porsche 911 GT3 12.4secs@113mph
Ferrari 360 12.9secs@110mph
Corvette C5 13.4secs@107mph
Honda NSX 13.4secs@105mph

7.0 seconds for the 1/4 mile.
it's a 2000hp 'car'. They run it at half power round the streets as it's a bit twitchy!
Bugatti Verion is no where near this quick!!
