Someone I live with spilled milk over the carpet and didn't think to clean it up properly at the time. Can't get the whiteness or the smell out now.

This really will work, dampen the area with warm water cover with baking soda, when dry vacuum up residue, if the area is a little white from the powder clean with a mild detergent, but the smell will be gone, also works on wine stains

The milk soaked through the back of the carpet into the padding and possibly reached the floor. To get the smell out, you will need to really soak the area with cleaner so that it goes through the back of the carpet into the padding and to the floor. I have had good luck with a cleaner/deodorizer called Nature's Miracle that you can get at any good pet store and possibly Wal-Mart. You need to basically pour this into the area where the milk was spilled, making sure that the cleaner soaks into an area a bit larger than where the milk soaked in. Rub and push the cleaner well into the carpet - its going to be really wet. Allow to soak for at least 30 minutes to an hour or according to label directions. Then you can either suck the cleaner up with a wet/dry vacuum or the carpet cleaning machine or lots of towels.

This happened to me as a teenager. We got the stain out of the carpet but the milk had soaked through to the padding. The smell just kept coming back.

We had some success completely soaking the area in vinegar down to the padding and then washing the carpet several times with a carpet cleaner. Be careful not to soak through to the padding with water, it will mold.

Don't use hot water, that's all I know. It sets it in. I spilt potato bake in my car and it basically cooked onto the carpet. A good foam carpet cleaner should work. And remember, it's not worth crying over.

You need to get on top of that problem quickly!

Half a bottle of Mr.Muscle with some extra elbow grease will get that out1

Remember that there is no need to cry over the spilt milk though!
