I am an older person and live alone (that wasn't always true). I have no reason(s) to be extra nice to people just to get a gift at this time of year. I go about my daily business as always. I have no Christmas decorations set up as yet nor season music playing. It's as if I am on another world but then I step outside. The air is still chilly as it should be and the leaves still litter the ground and the sky is a blue that hurts the eyes but there is something else added.
As one person has said: "It's a magical feeling." This magic increases to a point that you just want to break into song.
If this all sounds sappy to some of you then you are missing the point. People chose this time of year to celebrate a very special birth and to bring hope to the world and I think we all need a bit of hope right now.
Once you get touched by the magic you want to spread it around to others and so we do.

Yes, people do seem nicer. I think its is because Christmas is the mystical, magical time of year that brings out the kid in us all, and we think of others and not just our busy day to day lives.
Merry Christmas!!

Because they don't want to be a Scrooge. Maybe its guilt. Maybe its that song "Santa know if you've been naughty or nice". Maybe they just want to recieve gifts. Maybe b/c Xmas is touted by TV commercials and the consumer industry as being the "season of giving" and everyone has been brainwashed in thinking that they MUST be nice during this time of year. And its supposedly the birth of Jesus..and no one wants to be a party pooper at the birthday party! (but I'm going with the brainwash thing)

It's all about what Christmas represents. Any other day they can show their true selves, but during christmas it's like as if the boss is watching over your behaviour - naughty or nice? - and about this time they are guilted into putting up an act.

Because it is the time of year everyone wants a gift. They have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. The Christmas spirit (of being friendly) should be celebrated all year.

No they aren't. People turn into assholes around Christmas because they are stressed out from over spending, annoying relatives, and waiting in long lines.

when that happens we call them: Hypocrisy is the act of pretending or claiming to have beliefs, feelings, morals or virtues that one does not truly possess or practice.
The word derives from the late Latin hypocrisis and Greek á½ÏÏκÏιÏÎ¹Ï hypokrisis both meaning play-acting or pretense. The word is arguably derived from á½ÏÏ hypo- meaning under, + κÏίνειν krinein meaning to decide/to dispute [1].
Truly believing in one's right to a behavior whilst denying others the same right does not fit under the definition of hypocrisy[citation needed], but should rather be termed as holding a double standard, thus leading to the most common misuse of the word.
Examples of behavior mistakenly attributed to hypocrisy include issuing or enforcing dictates one does not follow oneself and criticizing others for carrying out some action while carrying out the same action oneself.
This erroneous application of the word leads some people to believe that most people, if not all, are hypocrites; they tend to criticize what they perceive to be bad behavior in others, yet will justify it when they are inclined to perform the same action.
Rather, this form of behavior is closely related to the fundamental attribution error, a well-studied phenomenon of human psychology: individuals are more likely to explain their own actions by their environment, yet they attribute the actions of others to 'innate characteristics', thus leading towards judging others while justifying ones' own actions.
Hypocrisy is a deliberate pretense used to convey sentiments or ideas that are false (acting as if one likes something or someone or agrees with a belief or political position when in fact they do not).

because they're drunk or looking forward to being drunk. Of course for children and those who don't drink it's the prospect of getting presents from everyone close to you, because they HAVE TOO.
Oh and some people are just naturally nice.
