Did fire lizards ever exist?

Fire lizards are like the miniature versions of dragons. For the readers of the novels of pern you'll know what I mean.

I've read one of the Pern books; 'Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern'. I would like to believe that they were real. For all I know, they may have been. Salamanders are slightly different, but of a similar ilk. They are fire elementals, so there are probably some people who do still believe in them. I know I do. Or at least I like to tell myself I do.
