If you are so smart, then how come you ghave asked such a stupid and obviously flawed question. Sometimes the greatest musicians are not the most popular musicians, because their brilliance is beyond the spectrum of popular music. Some of the great songwriters of all time, namely Louden Wainwright III and Warren Zevon, who were extremely talented songwriters (perhaps less talented musicians) were only able to break through into popular music with basic novelty songs.
I think Ben Harper's "greatness" comes from his ability to not be sucked into popular music, itself in a degrading state due to naive folk like yourself, but to continue making music to suit his own taste and his own ability.
I always like to think that both one's love for music and knowledge of music permits them to realise talent regardless of whether or not that particular artist adheres to a person's personal taste. I don't particularly love Ben Harper, but his talent speaks for itself.
Also, i presume a number of artists are not selling all the records they produce because of illegal copying of music. Or perhaps in this case Ben Harper's record company simply produced a large number of records, which were not all sold. So in answering your question we would need to know how many records were initially produced, and whether or not he has in fact sold more albums.
All i can say is, popularity does not measure brilliance, brilliance measures itself.
