Harry Morgan - he came on as a visiting officer and of course later as Colonel Potter!

That would be the superb Harry Morgan.
He initially played Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele, the crazy general, in the third season opener "The General Flipped At Dawn".
His performance was so good the producers cast him as Henry Blake's replacement, Colonel Sherman T Potter.

If I remember correctly it was Harry Morgan. He played a general in one episode and then came back in another season to play Colonel Sherman T Potter.

The second colonel was a guest, playing a racist nutter. He came back later as the colonel.
