Since ratio is 1:20000
Considering the scale in same units:
Actual area of island=50km^2
=50 (1000*1000)m^2
=50000000m^2
Divide by 20000
we get 2500 m^2
This area would be on the map.

If the scale is mm: km
Then it would be 2500 mm^2
the dimension would be 50mm x 50mm

you divide the total area by the SCALE SQUARED . Do not forget an area is a length squared !

So 20000 = 2*10^4

you square this = 4*10^8

and 50 /4*10^8 = 1.25 10^-7 km^2 and as 1km^2 =10^6 m^2

your surface on the map is 1.25 10^-7*10^6 = 0.125 m^2

For a ratio of 1:200,000, the ratio of areas is lengths squared or

1:(200,000)^2 = 1:(2*10^5)^2 = 1:4*10^10

But

1 km^2 = (1,000 m)^2 = 10^6 m^2
1 m^2 = (100 cm)^2 = 10^4 cm^2
1 km^2 = (10^6)*(10^4) cm^2 = 10^10 cm^2

So the area of the island is:

50*10^10 cm^2

The area of the island on the map is:

(50*10^10 cm^2) / (4*10^10) = 12.5 cm^2

A square of 5 km x 10 km is 50km^2

5/20,000 x 10/20,000 = 1.25 EXP-7 km^2

Multiplying by 100,000x100,000 to convert it into square cm: this is 1250 cm^2

Scale on map is for linear dimension.
Area is linear dimension squared.
50*1000m*1000m/(20000*20000)
=50/(20*20) m^2
=50*100*100/(400) cm^2
=1250cm^2

Ok so ...lets say its 1 cm: 20,000 Km

If you had something 20,000 KM long..it'd appear 1 cm on hte map.

40,000 KM = 2 cm. Just divide by 20,000.......now this is only 1 direction

You want it squared...so divide by (20,000)^2
50 / (20,000)^2
