If you had about £300,000, (approx $600,000 at the moment I think) and you had to do something new (rather than replicating the help already available through ESF, LDA, JCP, LID & TAO (three acronym organisations) funding, what would you do? The idea is to move about 100 people into work that wouldn't have been able to get jobs otherwise, or via exisitng help. The project can last a maximum of 3 years.

I would donate to a pressure group campaigning for a reform of entry-level wages.

At present, the national minimum wage is unliveable in most of the country. People earning this have their pay topped up by benefits or tax credits, effectively meaning that the government is being forced to subsidise businesses that do not have a sustainable business model.

To make matters worse, it is common for pay for such jobs to be monthly, in arrears, and for any unemployment benefits to stop the moment employment starts (often with major deductions the first month for training, uniforms, etc.) This means there is a two month period where the new employee has no source of income: for many in this position, it is simply impossible to finance themselves and their families during this period.

So, I would like to see a campaign for an increased minimum wage (that the government does not have to subsidise), and either enforcement of reasonable payment terms for those starting low-pay employment, or help for those to bridge the gap between benefits and pay.

We currently have a system that makes it as hard as possible for all those unemployed to start work - and don't believe the tabloid hype - the vast majority in this position do want to work. It's a catch-22 situation that keeps people on benefits, and that is easy to get out of.
