Look for the thermocouple. It's a long skinny tube with a short, about two inch piece on the end, it's held in a holder that's screwed to the bottom of the furnace. The pilot flame usually hits it about midway. It sends the temperature to the regulator and holds the valve open for the gas flow. when it goes "phooey" it closes the valve and will not hold it open thus needs replacing.
Make sure when you buy a new one you get the same length tube and put it about the same length in the holder. Make sure the flame hits it when starting and hold the button for starting for an extra minute.
