The assumption is that it is the primary square root, which is the positive one. Whenever you're talking about "the square root" it is the primary one. When negative (or complex) roots of a value are included, there will be wording like "all roots" instead of just the radical symbol. This applies to other roots such as cube roots, fourth roots, etc. too.
