My friend decided to do an experiment. We drove around the city until he saw a kid wearing a My Chemical Romance t-shirt. He shouted out the window, "HELL YEAH! MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE!" The kid yelled back, "F*** YOU!" Then he saw a kid wearing a Slayer shirt. He stuck his head out the window, and yelled in the exact same tone of voice, "HELL YEAH! SLAYER!" The kid yelled, "YEAHHHH!" Later, we saw a group of emo kids. He opened the window and yelled, "EMO!" They replied with, "f*** you." Upon seeing some metalheads, he yelled "METAL!" and they replied with, "HELL YEAHHHHHH!"

We conducted this experiment over a series of days, and not once did we recieve a positive response from the emo kids, nor did we recieve a negative response from the metal kids.

Why did the fans of emo music react in a negative manner, and the fans of metal react in a positive manner? He said basically the same thing to them, in the same tone of voice.

Okay, ever since Heavy Metal was created, it has been praised and even underrated. But, even though this is true, the metal heads are still committed to the music that is near and dear to their hearts. It is their only shout and defiance to a society that is twisted and corrupt. By any means necessary, metal heads express that they love heavy metal and share it with other people.

However, when someone listens to emo music, it is because they are probably depressed or they think that life sucks. So, with that in mind, they spread the negativity with everyone else. They think that nobody understand them, and they plan to keep it that way.

Personally, I'm a lover of thrash metal. Power metal is favorite too. I've heard Canibal Corpse, All Shall Perish, and a few other death metal bands I can't recall. These two are the only ones I've come to like. The instruemntals make up for the lost lyrics. Black metal....never heard any bands, so I can't say it's good or bad. Sepultura and Pantera are all-stars on my list. Metallica hasn't had a bad album as far as I've heard. There are songs I'd never listen to twice, but the rest is fine. Kill 'em all is still the best album, though ;D Progressive metal is like a ping pong ball when you slam it very hard: All over the place. Bad, good, great, and the worst sound since dial up modems are all in there. New metal...I can take a bit. Rap and Emo metal is just...I don't want to talk about it.

Because they knew that you weren't being sincere about your enthusiam about their music, because nobody is, including the kids you were yelling at. This is mostly because emo sucks. As a metalhead, I can answer the second part of your question easily. As someone else stated, metal is all about the music, and for the most part, metalheads try to stick together. When someone they don't know demonstrates such excitement, (even if was for an experiment such as the one you were conducting), we respond positively, as our numbers are dwindling due to other genres, like rap and emo. The newest generation of kids seems to have very little promise in the world of metal, with the exception being nu-metal, which is MTV fueled crap, (not that every metal band on MTV is bad, but the ones MADE by MTV, like Limp Bizkit and KoRn, do in fact suck).

That is an awesome experiment.....can I try it to here in my hometown?

I think the reason the emo kids reacted in the way they did is because deep down inside they know that the music they listen to is a big pile of donkey crap and also most of them were probably only 12 and were scared to death that someone was yelling at them from a moving car. They probably thought you guys were a drive by or something!! Would you be proud of listening to a genre of music that when described sounds dangerously close to a red, giggling Sesame Street Character!??!
The Metal guys were probably a bit older and loved to hear someone yelling in adoration of their beloved quality, underrated music. As the perpetual underdog's metal fans love it when brethren acknowledge each other. Genres come and go, they morph and change to suit the times but Metal and Rock always stays the same and always delivers and that's why it has such loyal fans. Emo will dye out...it already is thank God!

LONG LIVE THE METAAAAAAAAAAL!

Lol. I'm a metalhead, but the reason the metalhead responded less violently because metalheads have been a family since Black Sabbath. Long live heavy metal.

The emo's are the "new generation" and are still young. Give them some time, and they will eventually dwindle down in numbers.

LOL that is a great experiment. I would say it is because metal fans don't care and just do there thing. Emo fans are very defensive and well sensitive. It's like there just waiting to be picked on or expect it no matter what the situation.

I like some emo bands. But am hardcore metal fan.

Because the word "emo" is stupid and pointless and the word "metal" is a more positive term i guess.
I personally hate the word emo and I don't know why someone would have invented it.

because emo has a negative meaning, its like shouting phag at a gay person, they probably wouldnt be happy either.

when you said metal, its different than saying emo.. because youd relate that to metal music, and with emo, people think of the stereotype (slitting your writsts, crying..etc) not the music..

mcr isnt emo though, theyre pop punk

Cos emos are emotional people and they probably didn't like what you were doing . . .
whereas
Metal fans are totally outgoing and probably thought you guys were having a cool laugh

cos emos are whingy little brats (ost of the time) and think everyones getting to them, they are really insular and anal, and majorly paranoid.
metal heads like to rock and share experiences, if someone agree with them over anything they are instant recyclabe friends.
metal people rock in general
