Even with many Muslims, rules and laws - even Koranic ones - are for everybody else to obey, but not by oneself.

Hey, first let me say that some of these answers (those referring to bombing, terrorist, etc) here given by some inhuman son of a bitches is just ******* wrong. Ignore what they say, they shouldn't even deserve the right to answer. Anyways, going back to your question...I'm not 100% sure, but I think that Muslims are allowed to touch them. I mean, other than the hygiene problem that someone mentioned, there could really be nothing wrong with touching them you know? Only thing thats forbidden (as im sure you know about ) are pigs. Anyways, I would still ask someone who's educated in the Islamic religion to get the right answer. But, don't just fall for answers by them that say something like "Oh, we just aren't allowed to touch" Always remember to ask why !

Traditionally, dogs have been seen as impure, and the Islamic legal tradition has developed several injunctions that warn Muslims against most contact with dogs. Unfortunately, many Muslims have used this view to justify the abuse and neglect of dogs, even though cruelty contradicts the Qur'an's view that all animals form "communities like you."

Everything is not written in the Quran the Prophet's (PBUH) saying are called the Hadith which give a complete explanation as to what is said in the Holy Quran. Yes dogs are not allowed as pets but you can keep them to guard your property

I have this question too, as all my muslims' friends can't give me a definite answer. In fact, most are just told by the elder that they are not supposed to own or touch a dog, but they never ask why. In fact, this is norm for muslim as most of them are borned to be muslim, they don't choose their religion, and they also never ask why.

I have known Muslims who drink and smoke. I have known women who dress modestly but wear short sleeves and tight pants with makeup, jewelry and flowing hair. They have a taboo about dogs, but some get past it. It is seen as a 'dirty' animal.
I myself do not like dogs, period. Never wanted to own one, too much trouble. They ruined my custom-made Japanese rock garden with a cobblestone overlay lining a waterfall stream for the flowers that sits beneath our raised second balcony.

~Who says they can't touch or own dogs? I've never heard this before, but I would guess that maybe they think it's not pure or something weird like that.~
