It does have Latin phrases in the books. The witch hunts in Europe became popular after Catholicism was rejected by much of northwestern Europe. They accused people who were reciting things in Latin of being witches. Often it was people repeating rosaries in Latin (they were Catholic). Basically it was an excuse to kill the Catholics on the basis that they were witches casting spells in Latin.
Many Protestant groups preach about seeing any movies that portray "witchcraft" (Star Wars), talking animals (Charlotte's Web), or any other "devilish" things. I think it is a shame that in an effort to Christianize Europe, local culture was demonized.
Dismiss these people who make such claims about Harry Potter as ignorant.

Harry Potter does not promote witchcraft. In fact, the only characters in the books that are witches were already witches before the story started. There is nothing in the books that says come and join us, you will have magical powers if you just read the books.
They no more promote witchcraft than Amy Tan books promote eastern religions, and you don't see any one saying anything bad about her books.
Statements like these are made by people who are too frightened to acknowledge other peoples beliefs. If they are so sure that their religion is the 'right' one, then why not let it stand on it's own?

It doesn't. I am a Witch, and everything I do is nothing like the things in the Harry Potter books. I could only wish I had a wand like that!!!!
I love the books, and they are great works of fiction and have gotten so many kids back into reading. Surely that is a good thing??

I don't think Harry Potter promotes witch craft. Thats absurd. Has anyone tried any of the spells? *snort I'm sure they'll work!* Rather, I think it promotes imagination and creativity, and at the worst, perhaps a desire to experiment with science projects (baking soda and vinegar anyone?).
Even so, modern day witches are a far cry from the hulabaloo devil worshipping witches that are denounced as heretics of the Christian church. They are mostly worshippers of nature.

They are indeed very entertaining works of fantasy. But because Harry practices witchcraft and magic many people take the stance that Harry is an evil influence on children. You will find, as you walk thru life, their are many, many people in this world who enjoy causing chaos. It's just their way of dancing at the party. Stay far away from them. They are up to no good.

Your pretty stupid if you actually go out and try become a real witch after reading Harry Potter. (But I secretly tried the accio spell. Even after reading David Eddings I secretly tried to "will" the remote to my hand--still do.) It's just people that have nothing better to do. I don't know why they don't pick up on the fact that they celebrate Christmas and Easter. (I know Easter could easily be a pagan holiday, and I've alway meant to go back and look to see if they mention Christmas by name.)

there is not any longer something evil in any respect appropriate to the Harry Potter sequence. the sole reason some human beings have that concept is using the fact it makes use of the words "witch" and "spells" which advise that the e book would desire to be approximately devil-worship. no longer something would desire to be greater from the fact. The magic contained in the Harry Potter international isn't something like the magic in the different fable sequence that i comprehend of. in this international, some individuals are born with an inate ability to make magical issues ensue -- they're style of super-human in that know -- yet with a view to apply that skill effectively and effectively and to verify a thank you to apply that skill legally, they'd desire to pass to a particular boarding college for "Wizardry". on the college, they study a thank you to apply their wands, they study Latin-like words wherein to tell their wands what they opt for them to do, and that they study all approximately alchemical potions and magical beings and magical plant life, between different issues. a million/2 the relaxing of the Harry books is gazing all the flaws that would pass incorrect -- there is diverse humor in this sequence. the main storyline, nevertheless, is a conflict between good and evil, as there is one incredibly evil wizard who needs to kill Harry and take over the international. yet Harry has a skill that the darkish Lord does no longer -- and it incredibly is this style of skill that each reader has to boot if his coronary heart is contained in the right place-- he has the skill of love. although the e book does use some strategies like "soul" and the concept that the type you behave in existence determines no count if or no longer you will get the prospect to have an Afterlife, those strategies are consistent with a super type of the international's religions, and easily is consistent with your guy or woman. provide it a attempt... the 1st e book is incredibly short and a very common examine... in case you like that one, you're particular to take exhilaration in something of the sequence.

I think it's sad the religious right would harp on this. For once, there's a book series out there that is getting young people to sit down and read, and their first thought is to ban it.
These people can get offended at any and everything. There's no sense in trying to understand why a particular thing is railing their cage.

I have read Harry Potter Books and watched the movies several times. There is going to come a time when we ourselves are going have to decide on who's side we are going to be on. Our we going to be on Harry Potter's side and stand for good and everything that comes with it or our we going to stand with Voldermort's side and stand for evil and everything that goes with it? I like to side with Harry Potter and fight Voldermort even if others are blinded by the truth.
