The new Acer Aspire Turion is probably the best bang for the buck today. Toshiba is good, but I get lots in for overheat probs and broken DC jacks. Acers Turion runs cooler and power adapter is recessed on the side. Nice Laptop.
Update: For those of you that think Toshiba is so great, well.. wait until it breaks. I have taken a few hundred of these machines apart and I will tell you first hand that these machines are designed never to be fixed. They have sensitive surface mounted parts within 1/16th of in inch of the power connector leads, which break alot, since they do not have the physical strength to handle someone accidentally pivoting one back on the plug. An expert tech has a 50% chance of being able to solder in a new jack without causing damage, using the BEST soldering equipment.
Secondly, the airflow plennums in most of them have radiator fins placed too close together, which traps dust, clogs the airflow plennum and then usually winds up overheating the inside of the case and causing destruction of your hard drive, or worse, the motherboard itself. If the dust clog is severe, it can stop the fan. One would think that the BIOS environmental monitor would step in and prevent problems... Guess again.
Even the simplest Acer has solved these obvious engineering problems. Take this info to the bank. Toshiba needs to address these issues and solve them to remain a viable platform for me or any of my customers.

I've been working in IT for 10 years and i would higly recommend a Toshiba laptop. I have used all laptop brands out there and cannot fault a toshiba in anyway way to to it's build quality and robustness. I wouldn't touch a compaq with a barge pole. if Budget is an issue go for a Acer.

Well with the answer choices you've given, I would choose a Toshiba. Most def. not a Compaq (HP) horrible customer service, I ordered some recovery disk, and it took 3 months to come lol. So yes Toshiba is your best bet!

I have had a Toshiba and an Acer and both were fine. Pick the one that appeals to you most on looks because in a year everyone will be outdated.

I have a Toshiba, it's not bad. The support hinge on the left side for the monitor broke though, be gentle cause I wasn't.
Acer is also a good brand, although I haven't tried their laptops.

None. Those brands are really sensitive. As in they won't play certain type of DVD/CD-ROM/GAMES/ETC. Plus, a little bump here and there and they'll break.
If you ask me, either get a Mac or something cheap lik DELL. 'Cause Mac is pretty good and DELL, when you break them, it ain't much to cry over.
