Learn is the only word I can think of. In the context of an academic subject.
In the context of extra marital affairs, to become familiar with my neighbours wife, *** or oxen, I would say ****, but you can't say that here. So root, screw, bonk, etc.
Familiarise is wrong. You wouldn't familiarise a subject. You would familiarise yourself with the subject. So go with ****. It's the fanciest word I can think of.

In English is a lot the comparable way. perhaps you need to hunt the commencing place of the words and notice how they differences by way of the history. Are you making plans on writing a thesis in this? perhaps nicely worth a PhD.
