the 1st, or E string ; the smallest

By bottom string I am supposing you mean the lowest toned one; that would be the 'E' string. On the other hand, if you mean the string located closest to the floor - when you're holding the guitar in playing position - then you're dealing with the 'E' string. Both are the same note, but 2 octaves apart.
