Listen here 'geniusjack' ... you are not too much of a genius, now are you? You can't even spell fleur de lis but you're lecturing someone on a name? And you don't even know whether FLEUR would be a boy or a girl? Come ON now! Duh!
Anyway, I like Fleur. I do not think it would 'ruin your child's life'. But a name like that has to be used cautiously.
I think it is best as a middle name (I have recommended it as that many times before) OR as a first name paired with a very simple last name ... two syllables. Like Fleur Johnson. Fleur Huckamonnaga, for example, doesn't look as clean as Fleur Johnson. The name still has to be balanced and simple overall.
So. If your last name is something like Huckamonnaga or Jarleybitzen, no, Fleur is probably not the best choice. In that case I would advise something more along the lines of Ann or Jane. But if your name is Johnson or Williams, it would be a wonderful choice.
I really do like it standing alone. When I hear only Fleur, I think of fields of flowers. Actually, the scene from "The Wizard of Oz" comes to mind ... where they're running across the poppy field. They look so joyful and at ease (you know, before they fall asleep and everything). I also think of a little girl picking flowers in a meadow. If I met someone named Fleur, I would assume they were free-spirited and honest.
That's what I think. Hope it helps you! Ignore the people who say it's a bad name. They'd probably say either Ja'Maiyyyakkkah because it's unique, or Hortense because it's sensible, depending on who they are. I think it's lovely.
