... all over our BRAND SPANKING NEW living room carpet a few hours ago and now the candlewax has solidified, as one would expect of course, making it virtually impossible to remove, take off or clean up!!! I did try to clean up the mess he so carelessly made as soon as it happened because he spilled it right in front of me but it happened so suddenly that I didn`t have any time at all to react, jump or dive to the rescue of my candle and its content! All I had time to do was pick up a few warm & "gunky" piece of wax but, unfortunately for me, it became solid very soon afterwards, almost as hard as a rock.

What should I do? Replace our new carpet, which wasn`t cheap to begin with as you can imagine, or replace my clumsy boyfriend instead for a more careful one?

Better yet, does anyone out there know how to remove hardened candlewax from any carpet?!? PLEASE HELP ME ASAP!!! Our living room looks awful now after this silly & mindless incident!!!

It is actually a good thing that the wax has hardened. This is one way that the wax can be removed but try it as a last resort. It can be harmful to your carpet. (see below) Place wax paper over the spill. Place a folded towel over the wax paper. Place a hot iron on the towel. The wax will melt and be picked up by the wax paper. You may have to do this a couple of times depending on the amount of wax.

Beware that using the method above depends on the type of carpet you have. The heat from the iron will cause some carpet fibers to "melt" and look like a burned spot. Another method for cleaning candle wax from carpets is to use a rag soaked in mineral spirits. Just rub the spot of wax with the rag and the wax will come out.

use an iron

Use the edge of a butter knife to carefully scrape off or lift up as much solid wax as you can. Fill a zipper-type plastic bag with ice cubes and place the bag over any remaining wax. The cold will make the wax more brittle, enabling you to scrape off additional wax with the butter knife. Repeat this procedure as necessary to remove as much wax as possible. Be careful to not disturb the original condition of the fibers.

To remove any remaining wax, finish up using a warm iron. I highly recommend that you set the iron on a low heat and test the procedure first in a closet or other inconspicuous place. A synthetic carpet can melt if the iron is too hot.

Place a brown paper bag, several sheets of clean white paper, a white rag, or a white towel over the wax spill and iron over them using the warm iron. Keep moving the iron so you don’t get an iron-shaped burn mark in your carpeting, and move the absorbent paper or cloth so the wax melts onto a clean spot. When you see little spots that look like grease or water, you know the wax is lifting up out of your carpet.

Replace the absorbent paper or cloth as needed. You may have to repeat this process several times (using clean absorbent papers or cloths each time) to remove all of the wax from the carpet fibers. Work carefully; you don’t want to burn yourself or iron off the paper or cloth and melt the carpeting. Do not rush through this; it can be time-consuming, so be patient—it will remove the wax.

If small grease-like stains remain, sprinkle them with baking soda and let it sit overnight before vacuuming.

You need to get newspaper or paper towells and place them on the wax spot. Then get a hot iron and run it over the top of the towell or newspaper this will make the wax heat up and melt into the newspaper. You have to keep changing the paper as the wax soaks into it. Keep doing this until the wax is all gone. It'll work. and it's much easier than replaing your carpet or your clumsy BF. Plus... us clumsy BF's don't mean any harm.... =)

put a towel down on the wax and then iron it. the iron will melt the wax and the towel should soak it up, however you may still have a stain on the carpet if it was coloured. Hope this helps!
