Weapons are tools, nothing more. How a tool is used is at the discretion of the person using it.

Don’t get side lined with all this claptrap about “abuse of power” and one ups man ship.

As for your question, as time and technology advanced so did the efficiency of the weapons being used. A sword is nothing more than the sharpened stone with a handle that is now crafted from metal which is more durable and efficient. Firearms are the more modern and efficient throwing spear or bow and arrow.

As man grows so does the tools of War he uses.

Weapons and human advancement go hand in hand. As a society grew and developed a power which made it more powerful than its neighbors they became predominant until some one developed the next step. For example most people will agree that The Greeks (Bronze Age) were a highly advanced society and for their time the weapons and tactics represented that. But soon the Romans (Iron Age) dominated and the Greeks passed in to History. Are the Greeks less important historically that the Romans? No, they simply were not as efficient and advanced and Roman Weapons and tactics prove that.

So what exactly is the relationship between man and weapons? It is the most Sympathetic, Symbiotic, Dysfunctional and Representative relationship imaginable. It is almost on Par with Man’s relationship with Dogs (which is another tool and equally shares in mans evolution as well). For Better or for worse Weapons are as much a part of humanity as it is the Nemesis of humanity.

The evolution of weapons from the most primitive variety; fists, stone knives, axes e.t.c, up to intercontinental nuclear weapons follows an obvious trend: The growing distance between the attacker and the victim. Strangling a fellow human being with your own hands is a much more difficult task than using a sword, bow and arrow, gun and guided weapons. The mass killings which took place in the previous century would not have been imaginable to the people of previous generations. How much easier is it to destroy human lives from 50,000 ft or by pressing a button on the other side of the world? A disconnection between the tool used and the effect it wreaks caused by this continuing evolution only engenders further contempt for human life.

A weapon is only a weapon if it is used. Man uses tools to solve problems. Fear of needing a weapon when the time occurs drives man to create weapons that might be used. So Man builds weapons due to fear thus creating a relationship between Man and his weapons.

At one point, when we were nothing more than monkeys, I think it was only about survival. But quickly we learned that we could overtake other species b/c we had the capability to think, create and build weapons (thanks to our opposable thumbs) like spears and arrows. After humans had conquered the animal kingdom, they began warring amongst themselves. In that, which ever tribe or kingdom had the best weapon usually won the battle. In the modern day, I agree, it is an object of power. He who wields the most dangerous weapon holds it over others as a threat. So all the controversy over nuclear testing in third world countries, the supposed existence of bio-chemical warfare in Iraq- Countries who have the capabilities to build those weapons already want to remain the elite few so that they remain the ones holding the hammer that keeps the others in place.

The weapon is the means for the man/woman to further his/her own agenda. Guns, bombs, money, words...they can all be used as weapons to achieve different ends.
